P0523 Engine Oil Pressure sensor circuit high

P0523 Code - This diagnostic runs continuously when the following conditions are met, with the ignition on  and Battery voltage greater than 10.0 volts. Set condition, the Engine Oil Pressure signal circuit voltage is above the calibrated threshold. Default action, the MIL light illuminate.

Possible causes P0523 Code

  • Engine Oil Pressure signal circuit shorted to voltage
  • Engine Oil Pressure signal circuit shorted to the 5-volt supply circuit
  • Sensor ground circuit open/high resistance
  • Engine Oil Pressure sensor
  • Powertrain Control Module (PCM)

Diagnose P0523 Code

Step 1. Check for active DTC
Turn the ignition on with the scan tool read DTC's and record on the repair order.

Is the DTC active or pending?

Yes, go to step 2.
No, perform the PCM intermittent condition.

Step 2. Check the engine oil pressure signal circuit for a short to voltage
Turn the ignition off, disconnect the Engine Oil Pressure sensor connector. Turn the ignition on, measure the voltage on the Engine Oil Pressure signal circuit at the EOP sensor harness connector.

Is there any voltage present?

Yes, repair the Engine Oil Pressure signal circuit for a short to voltage.
No, go to step 3.

Step 3. Check the sensor ground circuit for an open/high resistance
Turn the ignition off, disconnect the PCM harness connector, measure the resistance of the sensor ground circuit between the EOP sensor harness connector and the PCM harness connector.

Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?

Yes, go to step 4.
No, repair the sensor ground circuit an open or high resistance.

Step 4. Check for the Engine Oil Pressure signal circuit shorted to the 5-volt supply circuit.
Check for continuity between the Engine Oil Pressure signal cicuit and the 5-volt supply circuit at the EOP sensor harness connector.

Is there continuity between the Engine Oil Pressure signal circuit and the 5-Volt supply circuit?

Yes, repair the short between the Engine Oil Pressure signal circuit and the 5-volt supply circuit.
No, go to step 5.

Step 5. Engine Oil Pressure sensor
Reconnect the PCM harness connector. Connect a jumper between the Engine Oil Pressure signal circuit and the sensor ground circuit at the Engine Oil Pressure sensor harness connector. Turn the ignition on, with the scan tool read DTC's.

Note: The P0522 Engine Oil temperature sensor signal circuit low DTC should be active or pending with the jumper in place.

Does the scan tool display as described above?

Yes, verify that there is good pin to terminal contact in the sensor and Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connectors. Replace the Engine Oil Pressure sensor if no problems were found in the connectors.
No, go to step 6.

Note: Remove the jumper before continuing.

Step 6. Check related PCM and component connections
