P0581,P0593 Speed Control Switch (1 or 2) Circuit High

P0581 Speed control switch 1 circuit high
P0593 Speed control switch 2 circuit high

Possible causes P0581, P0593 Code

  • S/C signal circuit shorted to voltage
  • S/C signal circuit open/high resistance
  • S/C switch ground circuit open/high resistance
  • Speed control switch (right steering wheel switch)
  • Clockspring
  • Powertrain Control Module (PCM)

Diagnose P0581, P0593 Code

Step 1. Check for an active DTC
Turn the ignition off disconnect the 12-volt battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury. Do not place an intact non-deployed airbag face down on a hard surface, the airbag propels into the air if accidentially deployed. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
Turn the ignition on with the scan tool read DTCs.

Does the scan tool display this DTC as active?

Yes, go to step 2.
No, perform the PCM intermittent condition.

Step 2. Check the S/C signal circuit for a short to voltage
Turn the ignition off disconnect the right steering wheel switch harness connector. Turn the ignition on engine not running, measure the voltage on the S/C signal circuit at the right steering wheel switch harness connector.

Is the voltage above 5.2 volts?

Yes, repair the S/C signal circuit for a short to voltage.
No, go to step 3.

Step 3. Right Wheel Steering switch
Connect a jumper between the S/C signal circuit and the S/C switch ground circuit at the right steering wheel switch harness connector. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

Does the P0580 SPEED CONTROL SWITCH 1 CIRCUIT LOW set as active or pending with the jumper in place?

Yes, replace the right wheel speed switch.
No, go to step 4.

Step 4. Steering Wheel Jumper harness
Turn the ignition off disconnect the Steering Control Module (SCM) harness connector. Connect a jumper between the S/C signal circuit and the S/C switch ground circuit at the SCM component side. Turn the ignition on engine not running, with the scan tooll read DTCs.

Does the P0580 SPEED CONTROL SWITCH 1 CIRCUIT LOW set as active or pending with the jumper in place?

Yes, replace the steering wheel jumper harness.
No, go to step 5.

Step 5. Clockspring
Turn the ignition off disconnect the SCM harness connector, connect a jumper between the S/C signal circuit and the S/C switch ground circuit at the SCM harness connector. Turn the ignition on engine not running, with the scan tool read DTCs.

Does the P0580 SPEED CONTROL SWITCH 1 CIRCUIT LOW set as active or pending with the jumper place?

Yes, replace the clockspring.
No, go to step 6.

Step 6. Check the S/C signal circuit for an open/high resistance
Turn the ignition off, disconnect the PCM harness connector. Measure the resistance of the S/C signal circuit between the SCM harness connector and the PCM harness connector.

Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?

Yes, go to step 7.
No, repair the Cruise sense signal circuit for an open or high resistance.

Step 7. Check the S/C switch ground circuit for an open/high resistance
Measure the resistance of the S/C switch ground circuit between the SCM harness connector and the PCM harness connector.

Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?

Yes, go to step 8.
No, repair the S/C signal ground circuit for an open or high resistance.

Step 8. Powertrain Control Module (PCM)
Using the wiring diagram/schematic as aguide, inspect the wiring and connectors between the speed conrol swutch and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).

Were any problems found?

Yes, repair as necessary.
No, replace the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), perform the Powertrain verification test.
