P1696 code - This diagnostic runs continuously when the following conditions are met, with the ignition on, diagnostic also runs at power down. The PCM writes to a EEPROM location and reads it back to confirm equivalence. Nine consecutive differences causes a failure. Default action MIL ligh illuminate.
- Excessive resistance in the PCM power or ground circuits
- Powertrain Control Module (PCM)
Turn the ignition on, with the scan tool program odometer into PCM. With the scan tool erase DTCs, cycle the ignition off and on. With the scan tool read DTCs.
Is the DTC active or pending?
Yes, replace and program the Powertrain Control Module.
No, perform the Powertrain verification test.
